They call me Keith.
I was deeply aware of the responsibility I had accepted. I had been an expensive purchase for the owners and I knew they trusted me to succeed where others had failed.
I spotted my opportunity. It would not be an easy catch, but I had to take it. The consequences of failing were too awful.
I focussed on the task. My body tensed then released. For a moment I thought I had miscalculated the trajectory but with a sharp twist I regained my target.
It was bigger than I had anticipated, but I had a duty; the sacrifice had to be made. I found my feet smoothly and after a brief struggle I knew I would be successful.
The return was tiring. My body was aching when I reached the portal.
It was only then, with a shock, that I saw my miscalculation. The owners had designed the portal only for me. I could not take my prize.
I stood for a while, dazed by my failure. But eventually my good breeding and hard training took over. I was better than this!
My mind buzzed as I evaluated all possible courses of action. Only one made sense and would enable me to keep to the spirit of my task.
Top and tail was the solution. Top and tail. That would be just as meaningful as the whole.
Job done, I approached the portal, hoping it would not be too late. Dawn was near. It would not do to be caught in the act.
As usual I shuddered as I passed through. All was different this side; the change was disorientating. This felt smooth, the other was rough.
My name is His Holiness Rajah Rama Vipra Marthandam – – The Third, but they call me Keith. I am a priest.
I offered the sacrifice. I hoped it would be acceptable, and that the effort I had made would be recognised. Now to rest.
I was deeply asleep when I was woken by the screams.
Local Newspaper story:
Retired business owners, Dick and Mary Newman, came down for breakfast to find the head and tail of a large rat on their kitchen floor.
Their purebred cat, an Ashera, is worth £125,000; they call him Keith.
